Mid Layers for Men

Often forgotten about, sat underneath a coat or a jacket, mid layers are actually the unsung hero of your wardrobe. Super-versatile, these can help you warm up for a workout or keep you warm while out and about.

Let's get into the detail.

Mid layers are the insulating layers you wear between your base layer (the one closest to your skin) and your outer layer (usually a jacket). Hence the name, "mid". Clever.

Its primary function is to trap warm air, providing insulation and helping regulate your body temperature during outdoor activities.

When should I wear a mid layer?

Mid-layers are versatile, I know we've already said this, but they really can be worn in various situations:

On the way to the gym: warm the body up for the rigours of any workout with a mid-layer. Choose a zip-up so that you can easily take it off once you've built up a bit of a sweat.

Cold weather activities: It's a pretty vital layer in the cold weather. Whether you're hiking, camping, or snowboarding, you can keep out the chilly temperatures with a mid layer.

Layering system: In colder conditions, you may need all three layers (base, mid, outer). In milder weather, you might skip the outer layer and just wear a base and mid-layer. See why we think they're so versatile?

Everyday wear: Some mid-layers, like fleece jackets, can also be worn solo for warmth.

What to look out for when buying a mid-layer

Warmth:

Consider the activity and expected temperatures. What outer layer are you going to wear?

The mid should be working with the outer layer, rather than fighting with it.

Make sure that your mid-layer isn't too bulky if you're wearing a thin outer layer.

Breathability:

Choose a mid-layer that allows moisture to escape to prevent overheating and discomfort. Synthetic insulation options tend to be more breathable than down.

Moisture-wicking:

Look for materials that wick moisture away from your skin to keep you dry. This is especially important for high-intensity activities or when you're warming up at the gym.

Fit:

The mid-layer should fit comfortably over your base layer without restricting movement. Consider a slightly looser fit to allow for layering. Our oversized V_CORE Mid Layer is ideal as a looser fitted option.

Packability:

If you'll be carrying the mid-layer in a backpack, or carting it around at the gym, choose a lightweight and compressible option.

Materials:

Fleece: Warm, breathable, and quick-drying, but can pill over time.

Down: Lightweight, excellent warmth-to-weight ratio, compressible. Loses insulation when wet.

Synthetic insulation: Good warmth, dries quickly, retains insulation when wet. Can be less compressible than down.

Softshell: Wind-resistant, water-resistant, some breathability. Less warm than other options.

Additional tips

Think about layering: Ensure your mid-layer works well with your base and outer layers.

Read reviews: Check online reviews to see what others say about specific mid-layers.

Remember, the best mid-layer for you depends on your specific needs and preferences. Consider the activity, weather conditions, and your personal comfort when making your choice.
